A Comparison of California 2022 Total Homeless Count Data to 2020 Total Count Data by Region: Northern California; Central California; and Southern California

A comparison by region reveals the following, which is detailed in Tables 1 – 3 below:

• Northern California: The number of persons counted in 2020 was 52,214 and 59,614 in 2022 representing an increase of 7,440 persons or 14.2%;
• Southern California: The number of persons counted in 2020 was 95,275 and 98,256 in 2022 representing an increase of 2,981 persons or 3.1%;
• Central California: The number of persons counted in 2020 was 14,059 and 13,651 in 2022 representing a decrease of 408 persons or 2.9%.

A comparison of the two counts for the entire state reveals

• The number of persons counted in 2020 was 161,548 and 171,521 in 2022 representing an increase of 9,973 persons or 6.2%.

Each Region’s Percentage of Total Persons Counted Statewide

The total number of persons counted in each region in 2020 and 2022 equals a percentage of the total number of persons counted statewide, which was 161,548 in 2020 and 171,521 in 2022 as noted above.

The following is detailed in Table 4 below

• Northern California: the 52,214 persons counted in 2020 represented 32.3% of the State Total Count in 2020 and the 59,614 persons counted in 2022 represented 34.7% of the State Total Count in 2022;

• Central California: the 14,059 persons counted in 2020 represented 8.7% of the State Total Count in 2020 and the 13,651 persons counted in 2022 represented 8.0% of the State Total Count in 2022;

• Southern California: the 95,275 persons counted in 2020 represented 59.0% of the State Total Count in 2020 and the 59,614 persons counted in 2022 represented 57.3% of the State Total Count in 2022.
